Scutellaria lateriflora – wired, worried and exhausted

Scutellaria was the strongest direct stress record in the complete Materia Medica search. Its centre is nervous irritability sitting on top of genuine exhaustion. The person has been working, caring or worrying for too long; the nerves now feel thin and over-responsive. [1]

Noise, interruption and close heated rooms aggravate. Thoughts loop at night, the person goes to bed tired but cannot switch off, and twitching or restlessness can appear as sleep approaches. Cool fresh air, moderate movement, quiet and even a short genuinely refreshing nap can make a disproportionate difference.

Compare Kali phosphoricum when the nervous system feels more empty and flat than restless. Compare Passiflora when the main manifestation is evening sleeplessness without the broader daytime irritability/twitching picture.

Nux vomica – the deadline, coffee and overstimulation cycle

Nux vomica is the source picture of the high-output person whose coping strategy becomes part of the problem: more work, more caffeine, later nights, richer food, perhaps more alcohol, followed by increasing irritability and sensory intolerance. [2]

The mind remains sharp and driven but the system is becoming brittle. Noise, light, odours and contradiction feel intrusive. Sleep may not start because the mind remains active, or the person wakes around 3–4 a.m. with work, worry or indigestion already running again.

Kali phosphoricum moves beyond ordinary tension into mental prostration after sustained duty, grief, caregiving, study or emotional strain. The person becomes forgetful, overwhelmed and unable to tolerate more input. [3]

Small demands feel enormous. Noise and conversation exhaust. Sleep is light and unrefreshing, and the person may withdraw not because they dislike people but because there is no capacity left to process another voice or request.

Adrenaline (Adrenalinum) – the body fires the alarm before the mind catches up

Bacillus No. 7 was one of the most interesting whole-database findings. Its mental picture describes conscientious, hard-working people who carry too much for family, work or community and rarely complain until the body forces them to stop. [6]

  1. sit or stand somewhere safe and let the shoulders drop;
  2. breathe gently through the nose if comfortable;

The goal is not a perfect breathing ratio. It is to interrupt breath-holding, frantic upper-chest breathing and escalating physical alarm.

Move the stress chemistry through the body

The NHS includes physical activity among its core stress-management strategies because exercise can reduce emotional intensity and make problems easier to think through. [13]

Control, workload and boundaries: the home remedy people skip

The current NHS stress guidance puts unusual emphasis on identifying the cause, taking control of what can be changed, breaking large tasks down and working smarter rather than simply trying to “calm down”. [12][13]

For one week, divide pressures into three columns:

If sitting meditation makes you more agitated, start with an active form:

  • slow walking while noticing footsteps and surroundings;
  • a five-minute guided body scan;
  • writing down the problem and one next action;
  • paced breathing before trying to “think positively”.

Caffeine, alcohol and the borrowed-energy trap

The nervous system often gets stuck in a loop: stress creates fatigue, fatigue creates caffeine use, caffeine delays sleep, poor sleep creates more stress, and alcohol is then used to switch off.

The NHS specifically advises not relying on alcohol, smoking or caffeine as stress-coping strategies. [13]

For seven days, log:

  • first and last caffeinated drink;
  • total coffee/tea/energy drinks;
  • alcohol and time taken;
  • bedtime and how long sleep takes;
  • 3–4 a.m. waking;
  • next-day irritability and energy.

This is particularly relevant to Nux vomica, Adrenalinum, ATP and Passiflora source pictures, all of which are aggravated by overstimulation or late stimulant use. [2][4][9][10]

Magnesium: worth considering, but not a universal “calm pill”

Magnesium is involved in nerve and muscle function and is one of the most popular stress supplements. A 2024 systematic review found several small intervention studies reporting improvements in anxiety or sleep outcomes, but heterogeneity and small sample sizes prevented firm conclusions. Benefit may be more plausible when baseline magnesium status is low. [20]

Food-first sources include:

  • pumpkin seeds and nuts;
  • beans and lentils;
  • whole grains;
  • leafy green vegetables;
  • cocoa and some mineral waters.

If supplementing, remember that “500 mg magnesium citrate” on the front of a bottle is not necessarily 500 mg elemental magnesium. The label should state elemental magnesium.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets an adult upper limit of 350 mg/day from supplements and medicines unless medically advised otherwise; food magnesium is not included in that limit. Excess supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhoea and cramping, and kidney impairment increases the risk of toxicity. [21]

B vitamins: useful when nutrition is part of the stress problem

B vitamins are central to energy metabolism and nervous-system function, so chronic poor diet, restrictive eating or increased nutritional vulnerability can matter.

A systematic review/meta-analysis of randomised trials found multi-B-vitamin supplementation produced a small improvement in perceived stress, while effects on anxiety were not significant. Benefits appeared more likely in people with poorer baseline nutrient or mood status. [22]

The sensible interpretation is not “everyone under stress needs a high-dose B complex”. It is:

  • eat a nutritionally varied diet;
  • consider B12/folate/iron and other testing when fatigue is persistent or risk factors exist;
  • avoid assuming very high doses are harmless.

Vitamin B6 deserves particular caution because chronic excessive supplemental B6 can cause peripheral neuropathy. The European Food Safety Authority set an adult upper intake level of 12 mg/day in 2023, considerably lower than many high-dose “stress” supplements provide. [23]

Omega-3: plausible adjunct, but certainty is low

Omega-3 fats are nutritionally important and have been studied for mood and anxiety symptoms. A 2024 dose-response meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials found possible improvement in anxiety symptoms, with the largest estimated effect around 2 g/day, but the authors rated the certainty of evidence low to very low. For stress specifically, the evidence is less settled. Rather than treating fish oil as an anti-stress drug, prioritise regular dietary sources such as oily fish, walnuts, chia/flax and a generally balanced diet. High-dose omega-3 supplements can interact with some medicines and are worth discussing with a clinician or pharmacist if you take anticoagulants or have bleeding concerns. [31]

Ashwagandha: the strongest “adaptogen” evidence, with real cautions

Ashwagandha is one of the few herbs marketed for stress that has multiple randomised trials. A 2024 systematic review/meta-analysis of nine RCTs found reductions in perceived stress, anxiety scores and cortisol compared with placebo, although studies used different extracts/doses and longer-term safety remains uncertain. [18]

NIH/NCCIH summaries likewise conclude that some ashwagandha preparations may help stress and sleep, but products are not interchangeable and the evidence base is still relatively small. [19]

Important: ashwagandha is not automatically suitable because it is “natural”. It should be avoided in pregnancy, and caution is advised with thyroid disease, autoimmune disease, liver problems and medicines affecting blood pressure, blood sugar, immunity, sedation or thyroid hormone. Rare liver injury has been reported. [19]

Lavender, chamomile and L-theanine: calmer options with different evidence

Lavender

Oral lavender-oil preparations have some evidence for anxiety symptoms, while evidence for aromatherapy is less consistent. NCCIH notes that oral lavender may be beneficial but highlights small samples, limited independent testing and uncertainty about generalisability. [27]

For ordinary stress, lavender tea or aromatherapy can be a pleasant ritual, but the evidence for a commercial oral preparation should not be automatically transferred to every lavender candle or essential-oil diffuser.

Chamomile

Chamomile tea is a reasonable low-intensity evening ritual for many adults. A 2024 systematic review concluded oral chamomile may reduce anxiety in clinical studies, while NCCIH still describes the evidence as preliminary and notes allergy/interaction concerns, particularly in people allergic to ragweed-family plants or using medicines such as warfarin. L-theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid naturally present in tea. Small randomised studies using around 200 mg have reported changes in perceived stress, cortisol, sleep or attention, but the evidence base remains modest and some trials have industry links. [25][26]

Green tea naturally provides L-theanine but also caffeine, so somebody whose Nux-vomica/Adrenalinum-type stress worsens with caffeine should not automatically increase tea intake to obtain more theanine.

One herb I would not put in a casual stress stack: kava

Kava is sometimes promoted online for anxiety and may have some short-term anxiolytic evidence, but NCCIH warns that kava supplements have been linked with rare but severe liver injury. [30]

That risk-benefit profile is very different from making chamomile tea. “Herbal” is a category, not a safety guarantee.

A seven-day stress experiment

Rather than changing ten things at once, spend one week testing the main maintenance loop:

  • Morning: eat something nourishing before the first large caffeine hit if skipped meals make you shaky.
  • Work: protect one 10-minute movement/outdoor break.
  • Acute surge: 3–5 minutes of slower breathing before reacting.
  • Afternoon: stop caffeine early enough to test whether sleep improves.
  • Evening: write tomorrow’s three priorities down so the brain does not keep rehearsing them in bed.
  • Recovery: aim for a consistent wake time and a realistic end to work.
  • Track: irritability, heart racing, stomach symptoms, headache, sleep onset and morning energy.

At the end, ask not only “Am I less stressed?” but: Do I recover faster after a stressor? Recovery speed is one of the most useful measures of whether the overall strategy is working.

When stress deserves more than self-help

Talk to a GP or mental-health professional if stress is persistently affecting sleep, work, relationships, eating, alcohol/substance use or your ability to function. In England, adults can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression without first seeing a GP. [12]

Stress can cause palpitations, chest tightness, dizziness and stomach symptoms, but new or concerning physical symptoms should not automatically be blamed on stress. Issa Qandil (53)

Hello, I’m Issa Qandil, a homeopath trained at the Centre for Homeopathic Education (CHE) in London and a member of HINT International. My path into homeopathy began through a personal experience in my own family, when conventional medicine wasn’t providing the relief we were hoping for. Seeing homeopathy help in real life sparked a deep interest that grew into formal study and, eventually, practice.

I take a warm, thoughtful and individual approach, with a strong focus on listening carefully and understanding the person behind the symptoms. I work with people of all ages and I’m particularly experienced in more complex and long-standing cases, where health concerns can feel layered or difficult to untangle. Alongside clinical work, I’m also the founder of IQ Homeopathic Directory and the author of IQ Materia Medica, reflecting an ongoing commitment to homeopathy beyond the consultation room.
